Mumbai: Retailers who sell prepaid cellphone connections are under scrutiny all over the country after the Haryana Police’s recent discovery that over 1,82,000 benami connections had been given to people in the state.
Now retailers across the country stand the risk of losing permits if they are found flouting protocol while selling telephone connections.
While two retailers in Delhi have already been blacklisted, two of the telecom industry's leading representative bodies are still compiling a database of over five lakh telecom retailers.
Through this database, Advisory Council for Telecom (ACT) in India will ensure retailers do not indulge in any malpractices while selling cell phone connections.
"In fact in Delhi we have done audit checks. We have found two retaliers guilty of not performing what they are supposed to do. We immediately blacklisted them from the industry. You have to recongnize that the industry is acting in a very responsible and proactive manner," said Director General, Cellular Operator Association of India (COAI), T V Ramachandran.
The telecom industry strongly feels that retailers had a big role to play in the lack of adequate verification in the case of prepaid connections.
ACT was formed after the Government and law enforcement agencies informed the telecom industry about a lapse in subscriber verifications requirements laid down by the Department of Telecommunications (DOT).
ACT comprises of the (COAI) and Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India (AUSPI).
