Islamabad/New Delhi: Pakistan Interior Ministry spokesperson Javed Iqbal Cheema said it was neither bullets nor shrapnel from the suicide bomber that killed Benazir Bhutto.
Releasing a video of her last moments, Cheema said Benazir suffered a “deep fracture” on her right temple as she hit the lever of her vehicle’s sunroof under the impact of the explosion.
Earlier in the day, Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz quoted medical reports to say she was hit by sharpnel on the right side of her skull.
Doctors said a post mortem was not done on the request of Benazir's family. Cheema also cited intelligence intercepts as indicating that al Qaeda leader Betulla Masood had ordered the killing.
“She was tugging down when she was thrown by the force of the explosion. Unfortunately one of the levers on the left side of the sunroof hit her on the right side. It caused fractures in her skull and that, unfortunately, became the cause of her death,” Cheema told a news conference.
However, Benazir’s husband Asif Ali Zardari refused to buy the argument. Rejecting the Interior Ministry’s statement, Zardari said there were witnesses who had heard the gunshots.
“We acknowledge there was a blast but first she was shot and then there was the blast. I have witnesses who were there were never questioned by Pakistan government. I designed her vehicle so I know it better than anyone else. Instead of owning responsibility and admitting to their guilt, they (government) turn around and put the ball in other person’s court. Yes, the post-mortem needed my permission but by the time I landed, it was too late. She had a death will which one of her friends in America has released,” an emotional Zardari told CNN-IBN.
