New Delhi: Benazir Bhutto's bodyguard Zaheer Ahmad, too, died while trying to protect her when the suicide bomber blew himself up. His body arrived on Saturday in Lahore from where it will be flown to his hometown in Karachi for the final rites.

Even as Benazir's supporters laid their leader to rest, they also mourned the death of her bodyguard and others who had protected the former Pakistan prime minister for the 11 weeks that she was in the country after returning in October from a self-imposed exile of eight years.

During Benazir's homecoming procession on October 18, her bodyguards were successful in protecting their leader from a suicide bomber. But on December 27 they weren't successful and some also lost their lives in the process.

Zaheer was killed along with the leader he was sworn to protect. The bodyguard fell victim to the suicide bomb attack - as soon as he stepped in to form a human shield around Benazir.

Hundreds gathered in Zaheer's neighbourhood, where his nephew was preparing for the final rites.

"He was very good human being. Whatever has happened with him is not good," one of his neighbours said.

Zaheer's family is proud that he gave his life in the line of duty.

The 40-year Zaheer was unmarried and lived in Lahore in a rented house with his nephew, after his family moved to Karachi. Neighbours say he was a very popular figure in the area, which is a stronghold of Pakistan People's Party supporters.
