New Delhi: The 61st Cannes Film Festival came to an end on Sunday and as is tradition, the Palme d'Or award ceremony marked the closure.
The much-awaited verdict was finally given and the festival’s most desired award was announced in the presence of glittering stars.
The nine-member jury headed by Sean Penn, gave the best actor award to Benecio del toro for playing Che Guevara in Steven Soderbergh's mammoth biopic Che, on the Argentinian revolutionary.
“I've got to thank a lot of people for this stuff. This is not just me, it's the writer, the director, the producer. I think they enjoy the movie too, which is great and I'm very proud of the movie," an elated del Toro said.
The coveted award for the best actress went to Sandra Corveloni for the Portuguese film Linha de Passe, in which she plays a mother of four, struggling for survival in a Brazilian slum.
After almost two decades, a French film, The Class, won the Palme d'Or for the best film. Directed by Laurent Cantet, the film is about classroom life, using real students and teachers at a junior high school.
Jury head Sean Penn confessed that this year the competition was tough.
"There was a field of such powerful, emotional, moving movies, performances. There was so many times that we thought, it just can't get better," Penn said.
