Kolkata: The beleaguered Left parties in Bengal launched yet another confidence building exercise. In a show of strength in the heart of Kolkata on Monday, leaders got together in a massive rally and addressed the public.

More than the Trinamool's rise or the Maoist threat, it's the rock-bottom morale of its cadres that's worrying the Left leadership.

Bengal Chief Minister and CPM Politburo Member Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said, "Our very foundation is being questioned on the basis of a few election results. It's been said that we have failed. People will judge and we trust the people."

Bhattacharjee also made it clear that he isn't backtracking from industrialisation but sounded dependent on the Centre.

"If the state and the Centre can jointly build up an industry in Singur, should we proceed or should we remain inactive. We will proceed. We will build the factory together," he said.

Left leaders used the opportunity to take a dig at Trinamool. Trinamool MP Kabir Suman's public expression of disillusionment with his party came in handy.

Revolutionary Socialist Party leader Kshiti Goswami said, "The songs they wrote to attract votes after joining a certain party, today they may have to hum different tunes on the streets to expose the betrayal of that very party. "

Ahead of a meeting to review its poll humiliation set for Tuesday, the show of strength on Monday on the streets was a face-saver for the Left parties.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's spirited speech to highlight Left's successes in Bengal reflects his desperation to regain the confidence of the people that he rapidly lost to the Trinamool Congress.

He also set the tune for Tuesday's front meeting signaling that demands for an early Assembly polls would not be entertained.
