New Delhi: Congress leader Beni Prasad Verma on Thursday yet again embarrassed his party with his remark that Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru should be spared the death penalty and sentenced to life imprisonment instead. While the Congress played it safe on the remark and refused to comment, Samajwadi Party leader Mohan Singh slammed Beni saying that he was an expert in giving irresponsible statements.
Congress leader Ashwini Kumar refused to comment on the statement. Meanwhile, spokesperson Satyavrat Chaturvedi said that it was Beni's personal opinion and that the party did not subscribe to it. Chaturvedi reiterated that there was no change in the government's stand in hanging Afzal Guru.
Minutes later, Beni retracted his statement saying that he will go by whatever the President and the Supreme Court says in the case.
