Cannes: The much awaited verdict for Cannes film festival's most desired award, the Palm D'or, was announced in the presence of glittering stars.
The nine member jury headed by Sean Penn, gave the Palm D'or for the Best Actor to Benecio Del Toro for playing Che Guevara in Steven Soderbergh's mammoth biopic Che on the Latin American revolutionary.
"I've got to thank a lot of people for this stuff, this is not just me. It's the writer, the director, the producer. I think the audience enjoyed the movie too, which is great and I'm very proud of the movie," says Benicio.
The coveted award for the Best Actress went to Sandra Corveloni for the Portuguese film Linha de Passe, in which she plays the role of a mother of four kids struggling for a better survival in a Brazilian slum.
After almost two decades, a French film, The Class, won the Best Film award. Directed by Laurent Cantet, the film is about a classroom life, using real students and teachers at a junior high school.
Jury head Sean Penn confessed, this year the competition was tough.
"There was a field of such powerful, emotional, moving movies, performances, there was so many times that we thought, it just can't get better than this," Penn said.
