New Delhi: With the sale of thousands of kilograms of sweets being sold this Diwali, adulteration is on the rise and is making news. Agencies are carrying out raids across the country in order to avoid the sale of spurious sweets.
Lucknow Additional City Magistrate Arun Kumar said, "We have found around two quintals of sweets that had been made in unhygienic conditions. We have destroyed this lot."
Agencies in Madhya Pradesh seized six tonnes of adulterated sweets right before Diwali. In Maharashtra agencies seized 5000 kgs of adulterated sweets and in Bihar, around 50,000 containers adulterated of ghee and khoya were seized. Meanwhile, agencies in Chandigarh seized approximately 25,000 kgs of spurious sweets.
Bihar Health and Food Department Designated Officer Ashish Kumar Singh said, "We found large amounts of dust and impurities in 'Khaja', which we destroyed."
Adulteration is big business during the festive season. A kilogram of milkcake that one buys for say Rs 250 can be prepared for just Rs 55 using adulterated ingredients. There have been instances when milk has been mixed with white paint, toilet paper crushed and mixed with Khoa and ghee adulterated with animal fat. So be careful this Diwali, you could be taking in a deadly mix.
