Thrissur, Kerala: As India-Pakistan relations touch a new low after 26/11, a drama troupe from Pakistan has come to India to spread peace and harmony. They performed at the international theatre festival in Kerala amid some protest.
On stage in Thrissur at the international theatre festival a group from across the wagah border have enthralled crowds. And perhaps the best part of all is the Pakistan troupe has an Indian actress also in one of the roles.
"India and Pakistan may have borders but for art and an artist there are no borders," said actress Mandeep Kaur.
The play titled Bulleh is about peace and harmony based on the life of the sufi poet Abdullah Shah who lived in the 17th century in Punjab province in Pakistan. At a time when Indo-Pak relation is at its worst — influencing everything from trade, sports and arts — these men hope to leave some
message behind for their Indian counterparts.
"As we all know India and Pakistan have so much common in their culture and art. But the borders made such exchanges very difficult. There might be tension at the borders, but here we are giving them a common platform," said Chairman, International Theatre Fest, Murali.
However, the BJP raised a protest against the presence of Pakistani troupe. But perhaps all protest looked pale as the men from Pakistan took to the stage along with an Indian. Art surely has little to do with man made borders.
