Meerut: Harbhajan Singh is making news off the field, and for good reasons.

Bhajji has bowled over a sick child with his charity. He wrote a cheque for Rs 2 lakh for the treatment of an eight-year old.

A powerful electric shock charred Aniket’s arms and legs, gangrene set in, and is eating away tissue from his tender frame. Now all his four limbs are bandaged.

His family brought the ailing child from Jabalpur to Delhi. But the costs proved too daunting, and Aniket was refused treatment. He was then taken to Meerut and admitted to a local hospital.

“An electric shock burnt his hands and legs, and he is now undergoing treatment with us,” says a physician, Navbharat Hospital.

As Aniket's family stood distraught, help arrived in an SUV. Team India member Harbhajan Singh entered the hospital amidst fanfare and excitement.

He slipped in quietly to meet Aniket and left just as quickly. But the sportsman had left behind more than moral support for Aniket.

“It was very good of him. He left a cheque for Rs 2 lakhs,” says a doctor, Navbharat Hospital.

But what drew Harbhajan to the boy in Meerut?

“He loves cricket, and used to play all the time before this happened. This is what we told Harbhajan, this is what melted his heart,” says Santosh Kumari, Aniket’s aunt.

A cheque for Rs 2 lakh and quality time with Harbhajan apart, Aniket has more incentives for a quick recovery.

“He said all of team India would come to meet him,” says Santosh Kumari.

For Aniket, it all began with a rude shock, but Bhajji stepped in right when it got dicey.
