New Delhi: A month after a paragliding session landed her in trouble with Muslim clerics, Pakistan's Tourism Minister Nilofar Bakhtiar has put in her papers.
She reportedly decided to resign, as she feels her party didn't support her when the clergy issued a fatwa against her for hugging her paragliding instructor.
The clerics wanted the Government to sack Bakhtiar and the Government led by Pakistan Muslim League(Q) did not back her.
Instead, the Chairperson of the party's women's wing asked her to step down.
Bhaktiar has not been attending office since then. She formally sent in her resignation to Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz three days ago, just before he embarked on a foreign tour.
Bakhtiar, a women activist, is not a career politician. The PML-Q had nominated her as a Senator for a six-year term in 2006. Bhaktiar says she has no plans to resign from the Senate so far.
