Bharti Yadav's fax signature is fake

New Delhi: In yet another twist to the sensational Nitish Katara murder case, the Ministry of Home affairs has confirmed to the Patiala House court that the signature on a fax allegedly sent by the key witness Bharti Yadav has been found to be fake.

Bharti Yadav had sent the fax last week to the Additional Sessions Judge from Middlesex in England seeking permission to depose through video conferencing.

Nitish's mother Neelam Katara had also hired a private handwriting expert to get the document examined and he, too, found the signature was fake.

However, the MHA has confirmed the address on the fax as genuine.

The trial court has, meanwhile, postponed the hearing in the case till 1600 hrs on Saturday.

The court is likely to decide on whether to declare Bharti Yadav a proclaimed offender as she has consistently failed to depose in the case despite repeated summons.

Bharti had left India immediately after Nitish's murder in February 2002.

She has not appeared before the court since then despite repeated summons, bailable and non-bailable warrants.

She is purportedly pursuing studies in London and her passport was revoked on March 7 this year.

Her testimony is believed to be crucial for proving the motive behind Katara's murder.

On July 15, Bharti's father D P Yadav - a former Rajya Sabha MP - told the court that he met her at a function in London but refused to say where she lived. The court on May 16 ordered D P Yadav to appear in person since Bharti's present address was not traceable.
