New Delhi: The face-off between Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and suspended IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt intensified on Saturday with the police conducting a search operation at his residence.
This was the second search operation by the police since the arrest of Bhatt on Friday.
Bhatt was produced in court on Saturday and the the police have sought a seven-day custody of Bhatt.
Earlier on Saturday, Bhatt's wife Shweta Bhatt on Saturday alleged that he was under threat and was not being allowed to meet his lawyer.
Shweta Bhatt, the wife of the cop, has written a letter to the top cops and senior government officials in this regard.
In the letter, Shweta pointed that her husband had been "surprisingly shifted to the City Crime Branch which has bad reputation of fake encounters".
She added that the branch was directly under the control of the present Chief Minister.
However, the police denied that there was any threat to Bhatt's life.
Reacting to the letter of Shweta, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Sudesh Sinha pointed that the lawyers were not allowed to meet their clients within 24 hours of custody in most of the case.
"There is no threat to Sanjeev's life. He has been kept in Crime Branch office."
"In 99.99 per cent of the cases, lawyers are not allowed to meet their clients within 24 hours of custody, but if there is a request, we do consider them," said Sinha.
Sinha further said that Bhatt was arrested as some evidences were collected against him.
"Sanjiv Bhatt has been arrested under 341, 342, 189, 193 and 195 of the IPC. The arrest has been made due to some evidences collected against him," he said.
Bhatt, who had accused Chief Minister Narendra Modi of abetting the 2002 riots, was arrested on Friday.
He has been charged with forgery and conspiracy.
The arrest came after one of his juniors, KD Pant, alleged that Bhatt had forced him to file a false affidavit against Modi.
The affidavit had said that Bhatt was present at the February 27, 2002 meeting at which Modi had allegedly told the police to go slow on the rioters.
Search operations were also conducted by the police at the residence of the suspended officer.
Bhatt, however, refused to comment on the arrest saying, "I cannot say anything right now as I am in police custody. It is not the right time. If I want I can say lot of things but would not like to comment. It is now for media to decide what is right and what is wrong."
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has justified Bhatt's arrest.
Gujarat party in-charge Balbir Punj said, "The arrest is absolutely justified. Just because you've abused Narendra Modi, it doesn't buy immunity from law. If you've broken the law, you must be willing to face consequences."
The Congress, however, said that Bhatt was being victimised. Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, "Bhatt is being victimised. His premises are being raided again and again. There is no law and order in Gujarat."
