Bhopal: A unique village provides a strong support system to the orphans in Bhopal. The SOS village is not just a school but also home attracting women from across India to turn caregivers and help the children realise their dreams.

Anudeep, abandoned when she was 3 months old, is one of the 100 differently abled children, living and studying in the SOS village in Bhopal. Her mental faculties are underdeveloped and she cannot see light. At the SOS village, she has found a family and a mother in Gurmeet Rani.

"I love this work. We live like any other family. These kids go to school and everyday we help them get ready for school like any normal family," Gurmeet said.

All the mothers in the SOS village have left their own homes to dedicate themselves to the children. Gurmeet quit a teaching job in Varanasi to raise six other children like Anudeep. Her family gets a fixed budget for monthly expenses and all her children go to school in the same campus where specially-trained teachers take care of them and teach them how to become independent.

The school has separated the kids into five categories - the care group, the pre-primary group, the primary group, the pre-vocational and the vocational group. With no sense of competition, the emphasis is entirely on inculcating self-dependence.

Village director Satendra Dubey said, "All the children have potential. We just have to tap that and they have a delayed development in everything, we are just trying to minimise that delay."

The children in the village are a source of support to each other. Oblivious of their pain, they try to make others laugh and tap their feet to music that they may not be able to hear themselves.
