New Delhi: Mahesh Bhupathi may have been a busy man for the past few months but the 10-time Grand Slam winner took some time off his schedule to set up a tennis camp in the capital for youngsters.
"This is where it is all at. I think you put a mini tennis court up and you get hundreds of kids playing and you do it at enough centers across the country and hopefully you build one or two tennis players. That's the way we are playing the number game and that's the way its done globally. Hopefully few years down the line we are going to reap the benefits," Bhupathi says about organising the camp.
The camp was set up in a Delhi school with children from class 1 to 4 participating. Colourful tennis balls, lighter and smaller racquets; shorter tennis courts and innovative games helped the young kids get to know more about tennis.
"This is a mini tennis fun day. The idea of this is to basically promote the game of tennis amongst children who never played. The goal is to try and put a system in place whereby children get motivated and excited to play the game," says Jaideep Bhatia.
And it seemed to have a great impact on the children with most of them having a great time on the little courts they played on and the prizes they won.
Tennis may not be the flavour of the season but it is surely catching up. And with senior players like Bhupathi leading the way for younger ones with coaching camps the future only looks brighter.
