Big B is cinema's global icon at MAMI

Mumbai: It's festival time once again, and Mumbai will get to see the best of international cinema at the Mumbai Academy of Moving Images (MAMI) festival. From Pedro Almodovar's Volver to Mira Nair's Namesake, the festival showcased a variety of films.

Singer Rageshwari opened the show with some new tunes and the awards ceremony soon kicked off.

Lyricist Javed Akhtar was given a Lifetime Achievement Award, music director Pyarelal got an Outstanding Contribution to Indian FIlm Music award, but it was none other than the Big B who the stole the show by bagging the special award as Indian cinema's global icon.

"I am grateful that I have received the recognition, though I don't think I deserve it," was all the seasoned star had to say when he was pronounced a global icon.

In it's ninth year now, MAMI is gradually going all-Bollywood! However, for those interested in the festival here is some more information.

MAMI 2007 kicked off on 8 March and will go on till 15 March. Over 100 films from different parts of the world such as South Africa, Spain and Hungary will be screened at three different venues in Mumbai - the YB Chavan Center, Fun Republic and the Imax Wadala Multiplex.

And for those who are into crossover cinema, the closing film at MAMI should be a big draw for it will be none other than Mira Nair's Namesake.
