Yorkshire: Honorary doctorates were awarded to Amitabh Bachchan, Shabana Azmi and filmmaker Yash Chopra at a sombre ceremony at the Leeds Metropolitan University in the newly restored Great Hall, which is now going to be called the Gandhi Hall.
For the Big B, it was also an emotional moment. "I would like to remember my father. He did his PhD in Cambridge in this country. This is his centenary year and he would have been very proud of me standing here today," he said
His family was there to share the moment. "We are very proud and happy to be here," said his son Abhishek Bachchan.
The university has partnered with IIFA to offer exchange programmes between its film school and the Indian film industry. Two professorships - the IIFA Chair for Global Cinema and an India 60 chair will also be established in the university.
When the celebs leave, this will be a constant reminder of the day that Leeds met Indian cinema.
