New Delhi: Rock, jazz, blues, all sharing stage in harmony — that is how it has been in India over decades. While most have grown up thinking the only way to make music in India is Bollywood, there is a whole other breed that has given India identities like Indian rock, Indian electronica and basically opened the lid to a success story.
Here are some of the bands that will add to that success story in 2009:
Jalebee Cartel are a group of former DJs who will take you on a ride that will mish-mash itself through spaced out vocals backed with layers of equally mish-mashed baselines — it’s an act that's booming the circuit.
Shaa’ir + Func is a combination of Monika Dogra and Randolf. The duo will tease you as well as give you a taste of some funk and sometimes jazz breakouts.
Soulmate from Shillong are your passport to the domestic blues rock scene. Not only does Tripti capture you with her vocal energy but with a few veterans on board who've actually seen the last few decades through, you’re in good hands.
Advaita puts together its traditional Hindustani roots with some deep and captivating vocals nicely placed over some well put together cruisy sound.
Pentagram constantly reinvent themselves to stay in the game each year, with their style of heavy as well as a connecting combo of rock and electronic. Front man Vishal Dadlani also doubles up as composer and makes sure he does his bit for the parallel sound by teasing it in his scores for many a Bollywood ventures.
It doesn’t just stop there but at least these bands will get you to take the first step into the scene. And once you are in there, a whole world will open up that is slowly even hitting mainstream areas like music stores and even Bollywood.
