Big Bazaar falls to Sena pressure

New Delhi: Shopping chain Big Bazaar has decided to hire back all the employees they had sacked, after a day of protests by the labour wing of the Shiv Sena outside the mall in Mumbai on Sunday.

All outlets of the shopping chain Big Bazaar in Mumbai were closed through the day after the Bharatiya Kaamgaar Sena held demonstrations at Big Bazaar outlets in Kandivili, Mulund and Lower Parel, protesting against the dismissal of 140 colleagues.

The incident seemed to be a Maharashtrians vs North-Indians clash. Sources said the 140 people sacked were Maharashtrians and had been replaced by North Indians who had agreed to work for lesser salary.

There were also reports of a few of windowpanes being broken at the Lower Parel but police presence however ensured the protests are largely peaceful.

As a precautionary measure, the mall will remain closed on Sunday. The management filed a complaint with the police and most outlets were given police protection.
