Cops charge infant with dacoity

Patna: In lawless Bihar, security issues are the top concern for police officials. So much so that this time a three-month-old infant has been charged with dacoity in Patna by the police.

The child, Praveen Kumar of Nehalpur village, has been named one of the accused in the bus loot case registered at the Meenapur police station in Muzzafarpur district. No wonder, the helpless mother guards him day and night.

"How could an infant, fed by his mother, be made accused in criminal charges by police?” Praveen's mother Shakila Devi says.

Praveen's grandmother says that the police has retorted to ridiculous means to extract money from poor people. “If not for money, then why was this done to an infant?” she asks.

And the gentleman who committed this mindless but courageous act, Police Inspector B Ram had this to say: “A case of extortion has been lodged against Praveen. The usual sentence in such cases is four to five months.”

Finding itself on the wrong foot, Police is now into damage control mode. Sunit Kumar IG, Muzaffarpur said, “There will be an inquiry and action will be taken against the person who has lodged this FIR.

In Bihar, uncommon has always been common. Regime has changed here but not the functioning of police. Be it Lalu's regime or Nitish's, Bihar police has always hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
