Vaishali (Bihar): They were lynched by a mob bent on vigilante justice. But even after death, their ordeal didn't end. Eight of the partially-burnt bodies — alleged thieves murdered by a mob in Vaishali district of Bihar on Thursday — were found on the banks of the River Ganga in the district on Sunday afternoon.
Says a farmer, Surinder Tiwari, "I could not go to my farm because of the stench. It's filthy. The bodies are rotting."
The bodies were meant to be cremated by the state government, but impatient officials left the job midway, dumping the bodies in the river. Villagers say local policemen are to blame.
"Eight to ten bodies were stuck to the nets, some were cast ashore. The police have dumped these bodies on the banks and asked the boatmen to dispose off them for Rs 200-400," says a resident of the area, Vinod Saha.
Adds a priest, Sanjeeth Malik, "The bodies weren't even cremated. They were simply disposed off — a heinous crime from a religious point of view."
The state government has transferred the District Magistrate and Police Superintendent of Vaishali, and suspended two other officers who were in charge of the cremation.
Four teams from the State Criminal Investigation Department are still in the village, and their report on the case is expected to be ready in a week. More heads could roll then.
