Patna: The devastating floods in Bihar have seen many people getting separated from their families. With nowhere to turn to help in looking for them, they are forced to try and make inquiries themselves.
"It's been 13 days since my father went missing. We still have no information about him," says Rahul Prasad Singh who has been frantic calls to the Bihar Chief Ministers Secretariat. His father Mithilesh Prasad Singh has been missing for 13 days.
Mithilesh was posted as the District Fishery Officer in flood-hit Purnia district and was sent out for rescuing marooned people in Madhepura. On the way back, his boat capsized in the strong current and he went missing.
"He was working for flood relief even though he did not know how to swim. Even then he was posted in the flood-hit areas and was not even given a life jacket," Rahul says.
The anxious family is now running from pillar to post to know the whereabouts of their sole bread earner. The children have been trying to seek an audience with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar but without much luck.
"He served the Bihar government but the government did nothing to save him. They are not even searching for him. I want to meet the Chief Minister. Please help me," says Mithilesh's wife Suniana Devi.
"The sons of the missing official have spoken to us. We have given instructions for navy commanders to help in finding them," is all, Pratya Amrit, Additional Secretary cum Commissioner, Department of Disaster Management says.
Similar cases of distress and trauma keep coming from the flood zone everyday and for the families the tragedy will haunt them throughout their lives.
