Purnia: After all the devastation and havoc that the Kosi river caused in Bihar, the flood victims are now naming their newly born babies by the river’s name in a hope to placate it.
One of the flood victims, Manju Devi has been blessed with a baby girl and she has named her child ‘Kosi’.
Manju Devi and her family abandoned their village to flee the rising flood waters and settled in a flood relief camp in Purnea and there she gave birth to the baby girl.
“If she would have born at home, I would have named her Komal Kumari but because she born in the camp we have named her Kosi Kumari,” says Kosi’s mother and flood victim Manju.
At the Malanga flood relief camp, one of out of every five babies share the same name.
“As she was born in the camp, we have named her Kosi. When she will grow up, we will tell her why she was named after the river,” says the father of another Kosi, Rajesh Mandal.
In another corner of the camp, lies a newborn baby boy whom his father - Satya Narayan, has named Pralay (calamity).
"We named him Pralay because we had to face so many problems when he was born," says the father.
The devastation caused by the Kosi's waters is now a thing of the past but by naming their newborn children after the river, these flood survivors and new parents hope to placate the forces of nature that changed their lives forever.
