New Delhi: More than 800 villages are under water and nearly 2.5 million people displaced by the floods in Bihar.
With the government's disaster management system proving inadequate, more people are now relying on boats, which means the people who the boatmakers are doing very good business.
A boatmaker, Kumod Mistri says, "People are troubled because of the floods and are getting the boats made to order. Though it is a bit expensive and they are hard-pressed for cash, what can they do? No help has been given from the government."
But the sudden surge in demand has led to a sharp increase in prices.
Boats, which cost beween Rs 6,000 to Rs 15,000 are going for much more.
People say that they are paying up to Rs 80,000 per boat because the demand has increased. They say they have no alternative but to pay up for their families' sake.
With thousands still marooned in the flood zones, boats are providing the much-needed relief, but the heavy price might just defeat the entire purpose.
