Bihar floods: Water recedes, but marriages

Bihar: The Kosi flood situation is over in Bihar but its devastation is still a cause of worry for people there. Marriage proposals have seen a huge dip in the areas badly affected.

Usha was to get married to a boy working in Delhi but then the Kosi floods washed away everything shattering her dreams. The floods took away everything including her jewellery and the family's crops leaving them with nothing to pay as dowry

"I had always dreamt of my marriage, but the floods killed all of it," says victim, Usha kumari. .

"We had saved money for our daughters wedding. I have three daughter, but the floods washed away everything, I am left with nothing," says Vimla Devi.

Not just the girls, even the boys of the Kosi region now face the same fate. Like Mukesh. The girls family refused to go ahead with the marriage after his home and crops were washed away.

"I have a son, but who will marry him, we have no property and our status has died," says Birendra Shah.

Five month's after the floods, people from outside the Kosi region are still refraining from sending their children to the area. Hundreds of marriages which were fixed earlier have been called off.

Many of the flood victims have now moved on, but a few young men and women find their future tough even after the waters have receded.
