Patna: Poverty also makes Bihar a hub for one of the worst forms of human exploitation - human trafficking. Alarmed by the rise in trafficking cases, the state government has started a drive to sensitize its police force on this issue.

Chatiya Devi, who is a victim of human trafficking says, “Galat kaam karwane laga,. Nachane ke liya bhejta tha," (He forced me for bad works, forced me to dance in public)

These horror stories are not uncommon in Bihar. Bihar has been a hub of human trafficking for long - courtesy poverty and illiteracy.

Hamara bacha six saal se lapata hai itna khoje nahi mila(Our kid is missing for the last six years. There is no whereabouts about him),” villager Mohd Israil says.

Human trafficking is one of the worst forms of modern day exploitation. By threat, by abduction and deception, thousands of women and children fall prey.

In the bordering districts of Nepal, over 550 missing persons cases are pending. Families here have no option but to send their sons and daughters to cities in hope of a better life.

The boys usually end up working in Dhabas and girls in brothels.

And the misery does not end here - even after they are rescued police, instead of rehabilitating them makes them co-accused.

This is precisely the reason why the Bihar government has launched a drive to sensitize police on the issue.

We live with the hope that police will bring Bihar winds of change.
