Patna (Bihar): Lok Janshakti Party MLA, Bihar, Rama Singh is accused in several cases of kidnapping. JD(U) MLA Munna Shukla faces similar charges.

RJD MLA Surendra Yadav has cases of murder, kidnapping and extortion to his credit. RJD MP from Siwan, Mohd Shahabuddin is also charged with murder and extortion and finally, RJD supremo, Lalu Prasad is an accused in the fodder scam.

Apart from the charges all these Bihar politicians are facing, they have another thing in common - they all have a a degree in Law and they say it is a big help.

Says Rama Singh, "A degree in law helps immensely because if we are charged and there is a case, we need not depend on lawyers. I can help my own case."

Adds Munna Shukla, "If need be, I can don my lawyer's garb and appear in court to defend myself. After all I have a degree in Law."

Legal experts feel law degrees are obtained more to gain some sort of immunity than anything else.

Says a legal expert, Arvind Kumar, "Politicians want to benefit from proximity with lawyers and their knowledge of the system."

However, what's appalling is that most of these politicians-cum-lawyers have obtained their degree through a back door method.

Take for instance Lalu Prasad, whose old friends recount how he got through.

Says Bihar Deputy Chief Minister, Sushil Modi, " We were in jail during the

Emergency, when Lalu Prasad feigned illness and took his exam in hospital. We all know how he took the exam in the hospital. There were half a dozen people there to help him write the exam and get the degree."

Law is a double edged sword and this has been understood well by law breakers in Bihar. Thus this rush to obtain a law degree for themselves, so that whenever law tries to prevail upon them, the same can be used as a shield to ensure a safe escape rout.
