Bihar minister threatens to cut off doctors hands

CNN-IBN

Patna: It's a controversy Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar could have done without; his Health Minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey threatened to chop off the hands of doctors planning to go on a strike. However, severe criticism forced him to retract that statement.

"Who dares to stop hospitals from running? I will not allow that, I can take extreme steps, even chop off your hands if you try to obstruct public welfare," Choubey said.

Later clarifying his stand Choubey said that he had just used a phrase and what he meant was that those doctors who were found wanting would be stripped off their degrees.

The junior doctors in Bihar have threatened to go on strike from January 31. There demand is to hike the stipend.

Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association has denounced the statement made by the minister in the Nitish Kumar cabinet.
