Bihar MLA, 4 others get life in kidnap case

Patna: The Patna Civil Court sentenced Janata Dal-United (JD-U) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Piro, Sunil Pandey, and four others for life in connection with Dr Ramesh Chandra abduction case.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs.50,000 each on the five people. Though there were nine accused in the case, four are still absconding.

Dr Chandra, a neurosurgeon, was abducted from Patna on May 18, 2003 by a gang patronised by Pandey. The doctor was later rescued by Bihar Police from Chiraura village under Naubatpur police station.

The abductors had reportedly demanded Rs 1 crore as ransom but police officials claimed that no ransom was paid.

Pandey, a strongman MLA from Piro, is currently in Rohtas jail for threatening some businessmen.

He had also threatened journalists after they published reports of his misbehaviour with the staffs of Maurya Hotel.

More than 20 criminal case are lodged against him in various police stations in Bihar.
