Madhepur, Bihar: It has been almost a month since the Kosi river breached its embankment, swamping many villages and affecting millions of people. But it was not just the villagers who fall victim to the floods, the policemen have also suffered a lot.

With police stations under water and records lost, law enforcement has surely become difficult but not impossible for the khaki lad men.

Police officials have been the victims of the flood as much as anyone else.

The Murliganj police station in Madhepura has been under water for 45 days but it is still functioning.

While some policemen have moved wireless sets to higher ground to keep them dry, the rest are still working in the police station wearing shorts and T-shirts.

“After the police station was filled by water, we moved to a dry place. But still some policemen are always on duty there because locals might come to the police station,” says Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Ziaul Haque.

Patrolling in the area continues on boats but the focus is on helping people and therefore law enforcement often takes a backseat.

“If we even find a person who is charged of some crime, we don’t arrest him because he is now a flood victim and is trying to save his family,” says Sub-Inspector Jankinagar Thana Madhepura Amrendra Kumar Mishra.

Police also agrees that even after life is back to normalcy, it will be an uphill task to restore law and order in the state.

“We have lost all the legal documents and records so law enforcement will be difficult now,” says ASI Birpur Manoj Jha.
