Bihar politicians use flood platform to lift

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: In the state of Bihar, the flood waters may be subsiding but the need for humanitarian relief is rising with every passing hour.

Several Central ministries may have announced relief but the Health Minister seems to be unaware of the situation at Ground zero.

Once ex-chief minister of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav and the current chief minister Nitish Kumar were a part of the same social revolution.

Now they are bitter political rivals.

Their differences are so stark that its even playing itself out in relief operations in flood hit Bihar..

The Railways Minister, Lalu Prasad Yadav, in an effort to drill home the point that he is the only one who is the ultimate saviour of the flood affected.

Lalu had even pointed out that while he had made food available at all railway stations, the state chief, Nitish had done nothing.

In the capital too, while help has poured in from several ministries, the pace at which it is being disbursed is very disheartening.

The need of the hour.is urgent medical relief and at the same time more boats are required to be pressed into relief work.

The union health minister, Anbumani Ramadoss is otherwise active and aggressive in issues ranging from campaigns against smoking, drinking or fighting for gay rights.

Surprisingly, though, he is yet to show the same intensity of concern for the flood-hit populace of Bihar.

But like Marie Antoinette, Ramadoss’s remarks are shocking too. Sample this nugget of wisdom and compassion.

“Bihar was vulnerable to epidemics even before floods...this is nothing new about the state..."

Meanwhile, the petroleum ministry has arranged for an extra 10, 000 metric tonnes of kerosene for flood victims and has sanctioned Rupees 50 million as part of its flood aid effort.

The relief measures for the citizens of Bihar would have been quicker and more to the mark, if not for these bickering politicians who do not even check the need of the hour before shooting from their hips.
