Bihar food war: Starved survivors loot godown

CNN-IBN

Madhepura (Bihar): The battle for survival in Bihar is becoming uglier by the day. The scarcity of food and relief material has unleashed a food war and rampant looting.

Flood victims, who have gone without food for more than a week now, are in no mood to wait any longer. More than 100 people looted a godown at a Block Development Office in Madhepura when the distribution of food packets was delayed.

"We are hungry. Instead of being giving us food, they're hitting us with lathis," says a flood victim.

Hungry and desperate to feed their families, the crowd made away with food rations and whatever elsse they could get their hands on in the scramble. Some were lucky and managed to grab a large sack of relief, while others took home only a few biscuit packets.

When policemen stationed at the Block Development Office to guard the food stock tried to stop the mob, one police officer was left badly injured.

"People were asked to wait in the queue. When there was a delay, they refused to abide by rules and they attacked us, injuring one," says a policeman.

The relief and food supplies that are trickling into Bihar are not reaching the affected on time. Those who survived the flood waters, are now living on the brink of starvation.
