Bihar temples run pulse polio camp

Patna: Bihar government is looking for some divine intervention to bring the pulse polio drive back on track in the state. In order to eradicate polio from across the state, the health officials have devised a unique strategy of organizing polio drop camps in temples.

People who visit temples to seek blessing from religious gurus and priests are being told to bring their kids for polio drops. And they are responding immensely for a change.

“Combination of medicines and blessings works better,” says priest Mithilesh Kumar. Priests across Bihar are combining medicine and blessings for a winning formula to wipe off polio in the state. And the target is every child who visits a temple.

“We are seeking help from people who propagate religion and are seen as religious gurus to participate in polio eradication programme. It works better and convinces people more easily,” said Dr KK Labh, a civil surgeon in Katihar.

Authorities believe a little divine intervention may just give the pulse polio programme a nudge in the right direction. So far it's not been a success in the state. Out of the 60 cases reported in the country in 2007, Bihar accounts for 15. And devotees too think it's a blessing in disguise.

“It’s good that temples are running the polio drop programme,” said Kavita a devotee.

The desperate attempt to completely eradicate polio from Bihar's facet is on, and roping in priests is certainly complimenting the drive.
