‘Bikini killer’ Sobhraj sore with Nepal’s SC

Kathmandu: Charles Sobhraj, who is serving life imprisonment for murdering an American backpacker in Kathmandu in 1975, alleges Nepal’s Supreme Court is delaying a verdict on his appeal because the judges are scared of media criticism.

“I am not happy with the order,” he told CNN-IBN when asked for his comment on the Supreme Court’s decision on Wednesday to reserve a decision on his appeal against life imprisonment.

Sobhraj, 63, said he had hoped to spend Christmas with his family and claimed there was no proof against him. Sobhraj, a French national, was arrested in 2003 from a casino in Kathmandu for entering the Himalayan nation on a fake passport 32 years ago.

A Nepali court later set him free, but Sobhraj, who is known as the “Serpent” for his ability to escape from jails, was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for murdering an American woman in 1975.

Sobhraj has appealed against the jail verdict, but on Wednesday, the Supreme Court said there was a need to review the passport case before delivering the judgment on his appeal against life imprisonment.
