Cops crack case, arrest Biranchi killer in Goa

New Delhi: The main accused in the Biranchi Das murder case, Raja Acharya, has surrendered in Goa.

Acharya had been on the run ever since child prodigy Budhia Singh's coach was murdered last month. His associates, Saroj Sahu and Akshaya Behera, were arrested earlier from Bhopal and Cuttack.

Acharya, wanted in at least 30 criminal cases, says he was being threatened by Biranchi as well as an IAS officer. The two had allegedly asked him not to harass actress Leslie Tripathy.

However, the police force of the two states — Goa and Orissa — differed on the circumstances leading to the arrest of Raja Acharya with Goa Police claiming that he gave himself up while its Orissa counterpart insisting that Acharya was held and there was no surrender .

"At 2.30 pm Acharya surrendered before Panaji Police Inspector Fransic Corte and he was arrested. He surrendered and later we arrested him technically," Goa Inspector General of Police Kishan Kumar was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.

Kumar said Orissa Police had informed them about Acharya's surrender plan and accordingly he walked in to the police station. "He told the police he wanted to surrender."

However, Bhubaneswar Police Commissioner Binoy Behera said that Raja was nabbed with the help of Goa Police with information from "our sources".

Behera told CNN-IBN, "We have information that he is in Goa and we are sending a police team to get him back. We will be keen on knowing if he had any more accomplices."
