New Delhi: Commissioner of Police (Bhubaneswar-Cuttack) Binoy Behera was on Wednesday removed following controversy over probe into the murder case of Biranchi Das - the former coach of marathon runner Budhia Singh.
Behera's removal comes a day after the prime accused in the case, Raja Acharya, mentioned Behera's involvement in the case.
Raja claimed that Behera was present at the time when money was offered to kill Biranchi.
Inspector General, Crime Branch, BK Sharma has become the new commissioner in place of Behera.
The Orissa government, however, described the transfer as routine and has said that the alleged nexus between the police commissioner and the gangster will be enquired into by the Lok Pal.
Orissa Home Secretary Tarun Kanti Mishra said, "The board decided the transfer after meeting today. The Lok Pal is looking into the alleged police gangster nexus."
Das was shot dead on April 13 in Bhubaneswar. According to police officials, Das was shot dead by three assailants, who came on a motor-cycle, as Das was going to celebrate the Oriya new year at the Orissa State Judo Association.
He was hit in the neck and chest and died on his way to the hospital.
Das is survived by wife and a son. He shot to prominence after discovering the talent in Budhia.
