Naveen Patnaik floor test today

Bhubaneswar: The first of its kind, a trust vote in the Orissa assembly has made the run up to the General Elections in the state even more exciting. Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief and Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik seems very confident about it.

After the BJP-BJD split, three Bharatiya Janata Dal (BJP) MLAs have already resigned and are likely to vote in favour of BJD which might further help the party cross the 74 mark magic number.

“We have the required numbers to prove our majority in the house,” says Patnaik.

Meanwhile the Congress is yet to declare whether it will participate in the trust vote or not. The party is trying to avoid voting along with the BJP against the BJD.

“Anything can happen tomorrow. We want to keep our options open and decide on the floor of the house. But the party has issued whip to participate in the discussion,” says Deputy Congress Legislative Party leader, Narsingh Mishra.

In the Congress Legislative Party meeting, which was held one day before the trust vote, at least six members were not present. This has given rise to the speculation that there might be cross voting by few Congress MLAs.
