New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday alleged that there has been a cover-up in the Commonwealth Games scam cases.
"This is a part of the cover-up. The whole affair is getting closer to the Cabinet. There is definitely suspicion that cover-up operation is going on. People of India are losing patience, this cannot go on," said BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman.
Nirmala was reacting to the CNN-IBN report which revealed that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's representative on the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, Jarnail Singh, knew and approved of the time scoring deal which has led to the arrest of Suresh Kalmadi.
"We will not lose hope. If the government has the political will to fight corruption they should not spare anyone involved," she said.
The Sports Ministry and important Commonwealth Games officials like Mike Hooper were also in the loop about the deal.
Kalmadi, who was sacked as the chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, has been arrested in the time scoring scam by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), but now CNN-IBN has uncovered a totally different angle to the case. Kalmadi reportedly conspired to favour a private firm in Switzerland by awarding the contract at an inflated cost of Rs 141 crore.
The letter shows Mike Hooper and Michael Fennell agreeing with the choice of Swiss Timing for the time scoring deal.
Defending the deal Singh said that the selection of Swiss Timing was done by putting every stage through the highest level of scrutiny.
