BJP calls attack on Pawar highly condemnable

Press Trust of India

New Delhi: BJP on Thursday described as "highly condemnable" the attack on Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and hit out at the Congress for alleging that its leader Yashwant Sinha's comments had led to the incident.

"We strongly condemn the attack on Sharad Pawar. This cannot be justified in any manner. But the Congress spokesperson is stretching this too far with his comment. BJP has never supported violence and will never support it. Pawar is a decent and nice person. His age also demands that he should be respected," Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj told reporters.

Congress spokesman Rashid Alvi had earlier said the BJP was to be blamed for the "unfortunate" incident.

"The incident was a result of the opposition party leader's statement made to incite the public. If the opposition party says that people will resort to violence due to rising prices, it means they are inciting the people of the country," Alvi said.

While attacking the government on its "failure" to control rising prices of essential commodities, Sinha had said some weeks ago that the people were getting restless and could resort to violence to vent their anger.

Swaraj rubbished Alvi's charge against Sinha and said the attack on Pawar was "highly condemnable".
