New Delhi: The much needed boost before the UP elections had arrived for the BJP.

"Uttarkhand elections will have an impact on UP elections,” said BJP president, Rajnath Singh.

And whether the Congress accepts the suggestion or not, the Opposition BJP has suddenly acquired a momentum on the eve of the big battle ahead in Uttar Pradesh.

The Congress was busy trying to find answers away from the real issues that have been affecting the Aam Aadmi. The party was unwilling to drag its national leadership into any inquest.

"There were a lot of factors. We couldn’t campaign because of the weather,” said Congress leader, Ambika Soni.

The way the results have come in 2007 is not likely to be a year of electoral victories for the Congress.

Local body elections in UP, Municipal elections in Maharashtra are the three assembly elections where the Congress has not had impressive performances.

And with the big ones yet to come-UP and Gujarat the Congress will feel the pressure.

No one will feel the pressure more than Dr Manmohan singh. And now Singh could find his economic policies coming under attack from both the Left and the Right.

“It is true that people will put their concern about their price rise their standard of life and how it is being improved,” said CPI (M) leader, Mohammad Salim.

And for detractors of the party leadership, it was an opportunity to raise the pitch.

Said Congress leader, Natwar Singh, “Sonia Gandhi is no longer an electoral asset as far as the Congress party and the people of India is concerned.”

While the attack on Sonia is unlikely to find any support from within the Congress ranks, the party will now have to live with one stark reality- its presence north of the Vindhyas has just shrunk a little bit more.
