BJP, Cong do mega meet to discuss poll sops

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: India's two biggest national parties the BJP and Congress are fully in election mode. The parties have started announcing their list of candidates for the parliamentary elections slated for April-May this year.

The Congress Working Committee is meeting in the Capital on Thursday to fine tune its election strategy.

Discussions are also taking place on what kind of promises must be made in the party's manifesto.

The meeting to be presided over by party chief Sonia Gandhi will not see the participation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is recovering after a bypass surgery.

The Congress has gone all out to woo the middle class and the poor with two substantial cuts in fuel prices and cooking gas price.

On the other side of the political divide, all NDA chief ministers are holding a meeting on Thursday at the residence of their prime ministerial candidate LK Advani to finalise their seat-sharing arrangement and also work out what issue would sell more.

The coming elections will witness a three-corner contest between the Congress-led UPA, BJP-led NDA and the Left parties, which are trying to form a third alternative along with several regional parties like PDS and TRS.
