New Delhi: The main Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday brushed away Rahul Gandhi's elevation to Congress's vice president post as "Congress's internal matter". "There is nothing big in it. Rahul Gandhi was always number two after Sonia Gandhi. Elevation of Rahul Gandhi to number two will not change anything," BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said.
The decision to make Rahul the vice president of Congress came on the last day of the two-day Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Jaipur, making the clamour to make Rahul party's prime ministerial candidate only grow louder. However, the BJP downplayed the development as "amusing".
"It is shocking and amusing. We are a little surprise because in Congress everything belongs to one family, then what does the number mean? BJP has no objection to it, but we would like to know what Rahul feels about youth, soldiers killed on LoC, corruption and other things," BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.
Most Congress leaders have been demanding a stronger role for Rahul within the party and the government. MoS for HRD Shashi Tharoor said on Saturday, "We would be in very capable hands if Rahul Gandhi takes over." Milind Deora, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Deepa Dasmunsi and Ambika Soni seconded him.
