BJP implements job scheme better than UPA: Report

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme was UPA's pet project but it was the BJP, which implemented it more seriously, according to a report prepared by the UPA Government.

The report finds that BJP-ruled states have performed better than the ones ruled by the Congress. Rajasthan topped the rankings while Congress-led Maharashtra was at the bottom of the list.

Maharashtra was in fact the first state to implement the scheme. Even the Congress' ally in the Centre, the Left failed to make it a hit in its bastions – Kerala and West Bengal.

Launched in February 2006, UPA government’s mega project guaranteed 100 days of manual labour to each rural household. It was initially launched in the 200 backward districts as identified by the Planning Commission.

Meanwhile, the Government has paid more than Rs 10 crore as wages to more than 3.3 crore households under its flagship National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).

With such a vast amount of money being distributed as wages, the Rural Development Ministry has advised state governments to launch a massive campaign for opening savings accounts of NREGA workers in banks and post offices.

Incidentally, Andhra Pradesh tops the list of states with the maximum number of accounts opened, with more than 8.4 lakh accounts. It is followed by Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh respectively.

Currently more than 1.6 crore accounts have been opened across the country in banks and post offices by the state governments.
