New Delhi: BJP candidate and sitting MLA, Puran Chand Yogi from Rajinder Nagar constituency of Delhi committed suicide on Sunday morning.

Police say that Yogi hung himself to death on the first floor of his Inder Puri residence.

Yogi's death is a big blow to the BJP which had fielded the sitting MLA against Congress MLA from Patel Nagar, Ramakant Goswami.

The party has demanded a probe into his death, saying Yogi died due to a cardiac arrest. "Such irresponsible statements without conforming it with family! I leave it for people to decide," said party's CM candidate V K Malhotra.

Many felt that it was set to be a keen contest as both candidates had a few strong points.

While Goswami was a chief whip of the Congress in the Delhi Assembly and his candidature was backed by chief minister Sheila Dikshit, Yogi had been elected from the constituency three times.

Yogis family has been completely silent on the incident but they maintained Yogi had been tense over the last few days.

"I can't say anything apart from the fact that there were political pressures," says family member Rajiv Yogi.
