New Delhi: Gujarat Bhartiya Janata Party MP Babubhai Katara was trying to take Paramjeet through immigrations and on to Canada on his wife Shardaben Katara's passport no 1100962.

The MP got caught out at immigrations who found that the picture on his wife's passport didn't match Paramjeet's face.

Both were detained and police sources say Paramjeet spilled the beans. She told the police that she paid Katara Rs 35 lakh to take her through immigration.

Both of them have been arrested for impersonation, cheating and criminal conspiracy. A teenaged boy believed to travelling Katara’s son’s passport also accompanied the two. So clearly this is a case of double forgery.

“A case of impersonation and cheating is being registered,” says PRO Delhi Police, Rajen Bhagat.

An embarrassed BJP announced his suspension from the party. Forty-six-year-old Babubhai has been the Dahod MP since 1999, an ST seat.

He is BJP's face in Central Gujarat as he has been an office bearer of the Dharma Pracharak Vibhag of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. And only a couple of months back his elder son was arrested by the police for being involved in the communal riots of 2002.

Sources in police say that Babubhai had traveled to Toronto three times on these specially issued passports.
