New Delhi: Criticising the text of the Indo-US nuclear deal, the BJP has demanded voting in the Lok Sabha on the 123 Agreement before signing the pact with the US. The party has requested the Speaker to take a voting under Rule 184.
BJP said that the deal would impact future atomic tests. The party has also demanded setting up of a Joint Parliamentary Committee to examine the draft agreement.
“We have made the request to the Speaker to take a voting under Rule 184,” Deputy leader of BJP in Lok Sabha Vijay Kumar Malhotra told PTI ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament which starts on August 10.
The Opposition move also comes amid discussions that Left leaders are holding to finalise their response to the draft 123 Agreement.
The BJP says the deal would restrict India's nuclear testing programme once the civil nuclear deal becomes operational.
On Friday, former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his party colleagues Yashwant Sinha, Jaswant Singh and Arun Shourie had met after the government released the text of the draft 123 Agreement.
Sinha said that his party cannot accept the Agreement, insisting it does not address its concerns regarding India's strategic programme.
BJP has also asked the Government to suspend all further action on the civil nuclear deal till the Joint Parliamentary Committee submits its report.
