Karnataka Crisis: BJP withdraws support to JD(S)

New Delhi: The BJP on Saturday formally announced the withdrawal of support to the JD(S) Government in Karnataka and demanded that fresh elections be held in the state immediately.

The formal announcement came a day after JD(S) chief HD Deve Gowda told BJP President Rajnath Singh on Friday evening that his party is not ready to transfer power to the saffron party in the state.

All BJP ministers in the HD Kumaraswamy Government in Karnataka had earlier submitted their resignation to the CM after the JD(S) failed to honour its October 3 deadline for the transfer of power.

Announcing the parting of ways, BJP leader Yashwant Sinha called it an instance of betrayal. "This is not an issue of power transfer, but of betrayal," the senior BJP leader who is in-charge of Karnataka, said.

Sinha also demanded immediate election in the state. " The moral of the story is we have learnt a lesson. We have to be careful in future," he said.

The BJP also alleged that the JD(S) was violating the mandate of the people of Karnataka and the voters will punish them for the betrayal.

Yediyurappa and Sadanand Gowda — who are currently camping in Delhi — have been instructed by the party leadership to return to Bangalore and seek an appointment with the Governor at the earliest to give the letter of withdrawal.

Earlier, BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu termed the JD(S) decision to not transfer power to the BJP as the 'worst-ever betrayal' by any political party in the country. He said the people will not forgive the JD(S) for backtracking on its promise for transfer of power in Karnataka.

Emerging out of the party's Parliamentary Board meeting, which was held on Saturday morning, Naidu called Naidu said: "People will not excuse the party. They will give a befitting reply."

The BJP Parliamentary Board had convened an emergency meeting earlier on Saturday to take a decision regarding withdrawal of support to the Janata Dal(S) led government in Karnataka after the JD(S) had stated in clear terms that there can be no consensus on the issue of transfer of chief ministership to Deputy Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa of the BJP.

Meanwhile, the Congress Legislative Party is meeting later on Saturday to discuss its future course of action after the collapse of the coalition government.
