BJP pitches for Nanavati report, Cong for Banerjee
New Delhi: The BJP on Thursday said that it stands vindicated after the Nanavati Commission report stated, in its first part, that the Sabarmati Express burning in 2002 was pre-planned.
However, the Congress alleged that the report, which was tabled in the Gujarat Assembly, gives “political mileage” to the BJP before the Lok Sabha elections.
Congress Spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “The findings are not final. It is just the first part so it is not complete. The Supreme Court had shifted the entire trial out of Gujarat, which rarely happens. And that is a vote against the Gujarat government and its administration. So the taint carries to all the other reports and commissions which the Gujarat government sets up. Also, the findings are at variance with the UC Banerjee Committee report.”
Despite Congress’ allegations, BJP lashed out at the Banerjee report with party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar saying, “Lalu's efforts through Justice Banerjee to prove that it was an accident is now a failed report. The truth is finally out in the open."
Meanwhile, the timing of the report is being questioned by leaders across party lines.
It is widely believed that Narendra Modi is being projected as BJP's mascot against terror and hence this report will go in the Chief Minister’s favour during the upcoming General Elections.
But the question now is who should the common man believe – the Nanavati Commission report or the UC Banerjee Committee report?
According to experts, this case was being looked at two levels: one was specifically looking at the burning of the S6 coach of the Sabarmati Express and second was the turn of events that took place after the burning of the train.
The truth could well turn out to be the biggest casualty because the BJP versus Congress war will grow bigger from here on.
Sources have told CNN-IBN that Railway Minister Lalu Prasad is going through the fine print of the report before he takes Modi head on.
