BJP puts CD show, says sorry

New Delhi: The Election Commission has asked the BJP to explain why it should not be derecognised after the party released a CD which denigrates Muslims.

The BJP apologised after CNN-IBN’s sister channel, IBN 7, reported that the CD for campaigning in UP polls contained objectionable statements against Muslims and showed images of the Babri Masjid’s demolition and the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat.

Top politicians have demanded that the Election Commission take strong action against the BJP. "The BJP should be derecognised because it is spreading poison," said former PM Vishwanath Pratap Singh.

Congress leader and spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “This reflects the true inner thinking, culture and motive of the BJP. The party is trying to spread hatred."

The Election Commission has served the BJP a show-cause notice and police complaints have filed against top BJP leaders like party President Rajnath Singh and Lalji Tandon. and political temperatures have risen in the battlefield of Uttar Pradesh. There is a danger that religious polarisation might once again start raising its ugly head."

"What is wrong if we want people to be told the truth about Ayodhya and Godhra," said BJP leader and former deputy PM L K Advani.

This bravado also seems to be a part of a strategy for the BJP. Some BJP leaders have distanced themselves from the controversy, but the party’s Hindutva heroes, like Kalyan Singh and Vinay Katiyar, are trying to derive the maximum political capital.
