New Delhi: The BJP on Sunday hinted that the party may be short of a majority to form a government in Karnataka.
Senior party leader Arun Jaitley said the party may be "a little away from the magical figure of 113" in the 224-member Assembly.
"Based on the latest trends available we may be a little away from the magical figure," he was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
He also said that he personally had very little role in the victory in Karnataka. "The credit goes to our state unit. I was so pleasantly surprised that seat distribution went on so smoothly," he stated.
He said that Congress won in Goa and Jharkhand and that too by manipulation.
"Elections are not won on leaders but more on political environment, social equations and the manner in which you campaign," he said.
"Congress' campaign was lack-lustre and without focus. The people of Karnataka have reacted against price rise, politics if opportunism and terrorism and have decided to give us and change a chance," he said.
However, Karnataka BJP President Sadananda Gowda said, "We said it before the elections that we will sit in the opposition bench if we are not able to reach the magical figure of 113 and we still stand by it."
Sadananda Gowda said that the dissidents within Deve Gowda's party were welcome to join the BJP.
"If they want to break away and join us, how can we stop them?" the senior BJP leader stated.
Congress leader, Prithviraj Chavan said, "Congress lost because secular votes were divided between Congress and JD(S) and BJP won because they used the caste card — something that the Congress will never do."
